User Generated Content (UGC)

User-generated content came to prominence in 2005 and can be used to mean a whole range of things.
To Stream UK it means an interface through which users can upload video content (recorded on mobile phones, cameras and video cameras) and have that content transcoded into a standard format and made available over the internet.

To this end there are three main parts:

  • the content management front-end and web interface
  • the transcoding back-end
  • the media-serving across the content delivery network

Why All the Fuss About UGC?

Content is key/king/queen and UGC allows channels or online communities to generate it an order of magnitude cheaper than ever before.

Current clients include broadcast channels, conference organisers and financial information companies. Each of these benefit from increased subscription to their service by offering interesting material which generates itself!

The really clever part is advertising to communities without turning them off (they are sensitive creatures...)
