The BBC use Media Hub

  • Client: BBC
  • Date Completed: September 2011

We needed a system that could handle huge volumes and intelligently filter content, whilst respecting editorial control. Media Hub was just what we needed and has gone on to become the hub of our multimedia operation.

- Karl Kathuria, World Service Technical Lead.

Overview

The BBC has been using the Media Hubproduct since 2007 when the News service sought an alternative to over-crowded inboxes. Since that time the platform has grown to fill the need and is now used for not only user-generated content but also the syndication and repackaging of content for over 200 global partners. The sytem is used by BBC News, 15 of the BBC World Service language services, BBC World and BBC Springwatch.

Technical Challenges

Transcoding and standardisation

Content is received in a huge variety of formats and from a huge variety of devices over MMS, email, FTP, webform and dropped through the letterbox! The transcoding back-end has multiple routes to ensure optimal and successful treament of content.

Verification of content

There is a system of seven checks in place which the team has been trained to use appropriately. In addition, the intelligent search feature allows content to be ordered according to a configurable, 20-variable search system.  That means you really can find the proverbial needle.

Multi-language

Media Hub is used by over 20 different language services within the BBC World Service including Chinese, Persian and Farsi.

Workflow integrated

The BBC has a six-flag system to ensure content goes through all the required checks before publication.

Connectors

Media Hub connects with over 200 different BBC partners, everyone from distribution platforms like YouTube through to commercial partners of BBC World.

Control of media assets

The unique ability of Media Hub to interpret and transform not only media but also XML has lead to the BBC using it for the repackagin of its own internal newsfeeds.
